Symplectic was founded in 2003 by four theoretical physicists studying for their PhDs at Imperial College. While working with the Faculty of Medicine on a project to create academic web profiles, they realised that academics were being asked many times a year for lists of publications for different uses within their institution. This realisation led to the development of Elements, an engine for collection, contextualisation and integration of research outputs into systems around the university.
In 2010, Symplectic accepted investment funding from Digital Science, a division of Macmillan Publishers, who share Symplectic's belief in providing professional quality software to researchers to enable them to be more effective. Symplectic now works with institutions beyond the UK and has offices in London and Boston.
